Early Life and Education

Hassabis was born in London on 27 July 1976. His father is Greek-Cypriot and his mother is English. He attended St. Marylebone Grammar School and then studied computer science and philosophy at the University of Cambridge. After graduating, he earned a master's degree in cognitive neuroscience at University College London.

Career and Research

Hassabis began his career as a researcher at the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience, University College London, where he was involved in developing computational models of the human brain. He then worked at Google DeepMind as a principal scientist before co-founding the company in 2010. Under Hassabis' leadership, DeepMind has made significant advancements in the fields of reinforcement learning, natural language processing, and computer vision.

DeepMind and AlphaGo

DeepMind is most famous for developing AlphaGo, a computer program that defeated the world's top Go player, Lee Sedol, in 2016. AlphaGo's victory was a significant milestone in the field of AI, as it was the first time a computer program had bested a human at a complex game of strategy.

Awards and Recognition

Hassabis has received numerous awards for his contributions to the field of AI, including the ACM A.M. Turing Award (2022) and the Royal Society's Royal Medal (2021). He was also appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2022 New Year Honours.

Personal Life

Hassabis is married to Eleanor Tweddell, a former research scientist at Google DeepMind. They have three children together.
