Boeing Fires CEO Dennis Muilenburg After 737 Max Crisis
Muilenburg's Ouster Comes Amid Leadership Shakeup
Former CEO Underestimated Severity of Crisis
Boeing Co. abruptly announced on Monday that it had fired its chief executive officer, Dennis Muilenburg, amid the company's ongoing safety crisis involving its 737 Max aircraft. Muilenburg's termination is part of a broader leadership overhaul at Boeing, as the company seeks to regain public trust and stabilize its operations.
Muilenburg's ouster comes after a tumultuous period for Boeing, which has been plagued by the 737 Max crisis since two fatal crashes of the aircraft in 2018 and 2019. A subsequent investigation revealed that Boeing had underestimated the severity of the crisis and failed to adequately address safety concerns related to the 737 Max's flight control system.
Boeing's new leadership team will be led by David Calhoun, who will take over as CEO on January 13, 2020. Calhoun, a former General Electric executive, has been a member of Boeing's board of directors since 2009 and is seen as an experienced industry insider who can help the company navigate its current challenges.
