As Much As Half Of Jasper Alberta Within One Of The Countrys Most Visited National Parks Has Been Lost To A Raging Wildfire

Wildfire Tears Through Jasper National Park, Causing Significant Loss

As much as half of Jasper, Alberta, within one of the country's most-visited national parks, has been lost to a raging wildfire.

One of two wildfires menacing the town of Jasper in the Canadian Rockies' largest national park roared into the townsite Wednesday evening, causing significant damage and loss.

According to Parks Canada, the wildfire has burned approximately 10,000 hectares within Jasper National Park, representing up to 50% of the townsite. Multiple structures have been destroyed, including several historic buildings and businesses.

Firefighters are battling to protect critical infrastructure, including the town's water treatment plant and electrical substation. The wildfire is also threatening the nearby Jasper House National Historic Site.

The Mayor of Jasper, Richard Ireland, expressed his pain and heartache as the flames entered the townsite. "This is a devastating day for our community," he said. "We have lost so much, but we are grateful for the hard work of our firefighters and emergency responders."

The wildfire is one of several burning in Western Canada, fueled by hot and dry conditions. The fire danger in Jasper National Park remains extreme, and Parks Canada is urging visitors to avoid the area.
