Plantar Fasciitis: Causes and Relief

What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is a common condition that causes pain in the heel and arch of the foot. It is caused by inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that runs across the bottom of each foot and connects the heel bone to the toes.

Causes of Plantar Fasciitis

The exact cause of plantar fasciitis is not known, but it is thought to be caused by a combination of factors, including:

  • Overuse of the foot, such as from running or walking on hard surfaces
  • Obesity
  • Flat feet or high arches
  • Wearing shoes with poor arch support

Symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis

The main symptom of plantar fasciitis is pain in the heel and arch of the foot. The pain is usually worse in the morning or after a period of rest. It may also be worse after standing or walking for long periods of time.

Treatment for Plantar Fasciitis

Most cases of plantar fasciitis can be treated with self-care measures, such as:

  • Resting the foot
  • Applying ice to the heel
  • Stretching the plantar fascia
  • Wearing shoes with good arch support

If self-care measures do not relieve the pain, surgery may be necessary to release the plantar fascia.
